Free directories like this one are a huge help in building links and improving your page rank.  Unfortunately, all directories are not equally regarded and neither are all links!

You should always try and build your link list with a good mixture of exchange (reciprocal) links with other web-sites in similar interest groups as your own.  Some links from other good sites which cover different subject to your own will not harm your site and you should try and have entries in one or two paid but human edited directories (Search engines like directories which are edited because it means much of the work checking links and content is already done for them).

Add links slowly - about 50 links a week is about right for a new site, more may be acceptable for an older site.  This is because too many links at once will make the Search engine doubt that your links are a true reflection of interest in your site.

What you must NEVER do is link to poor quality sites or to Link Farms which offer thousands of free or low cost exchange links.  Web-sites, just like people, are judged by the search engines, by the company they keep.  Linking to poor sites will destroy your site credibility.
